Walk into any technician's shop and you'll probably find several different products. Some technicians swear by one lubricant while others avoid it completely.

The truth is that there isn't one magic product.

Instead, experienced piano technicians choose different lubricants depending on the repair they're performing. In this article, we'll explain the products we use most often, why we use them, and a few expensive mistakes we've learned to avoid over the years.


What Are the Most Important Piano Lubricants?

Walk into the toolbox of almost any experienced piano technician, and you'll find several different lubricants, not because one product does everything, but because each one is designed for a specific purpose. Choosing the right lubricant can eliminate squeaks, reduce friction, improve touch, and extend the life of piano components. Using the wrong one, however, can create bigger problems than the one you were trying to solve.

In this lesson, we discuss the four lubricants we reach for most often during everyday piano service:

  • Super Lube – Our go-to grease for pedal rods, metal-to-metal contact points, springs, and other moving hardware where a longer-lasting lubricant is needed.
  • Protek CLP – A penetrating lubricant that's especially useful for freeing tight center pins and sluggish action parts when repinning isn't immediately practical.
  • McLube – A dry-film spray lubricant we use on key pins, keyframes, glide bolts, and other friction points to improve key movement and overall action feel.
  • Teflon Powder – A dry lubricant commonly applied to knuckles, keybeds, and other contact surfaces where reducing friction can improve performance without leaving an oily residue.

Where Do We Use Super Lube?

  • Pedal rods - During nearly every tuning or service appointment, we'll apply a small amount to both the top and bottom of the pedal rods where they connect to the action and trapwork. This simple step takes only a couple of minutes but often eliminates squeaks and noisy pedal movement before they become a problem for the customer.
  • Trapwork - Over time, these parts can develop friction that results in creaks, clicks, or stiff movement. A small amount of lubricant helps restore smooth operation while reducing unnecessary wear.
  • Metal-to-metal contact - Whenever a metal component pivots against another metal part or where a metal rod passes through a rubber grommet—Super Lube provides a durable layer of protection that helps the mechanism move quietly and consistently.
  • Damper pivot points - As dampers cycle thousands of times over the life of a piano, the pivot points can begin to develop small noises. Lubricating these locations helps the damper system operate more freely while minimizing unwanted squeaks.
  • Springs - Apply Super Lube to certain springs within the action, including damper lever springs and repetition lever springs when appropriate. A small amount placed at the spring's contact point can reduce friction, eliminate creaking, and improve the overall feel of the action. As with any lubricant, less is more—apply only what's needed to the contact point rather than coating the entire assembly

Adding a small amount of lubricant to pedal rods during every service call only takes a few minutes but can eliminate many squeaks before they become customer complaints.


When Should You Use Protek CLP?

  • Tight center pins - If a center pin has become sluggish from corrosion or age, a small amount applied with a hypo oiler can often free the part and restore normal movement. Many technicians use this approach when a complete repinning job isn't practical or when only a handful of center pins are causing problems.
  • Hammer flanges and Whippen flanges - If the action feels slow or individual hammers fail to return properly, lubrication can often improve the response enough to keep the piano playing reliably. In cases where only one or two flanges are affected, this can be an excellent solution that saves both time and expense.
  • Temporary solution vs. repinning

That said, it's important to understand what Protek CLP can and can't do. If an action has widespread verdigris or dozens of sluggish flanges, lubrication is only masking a larger issue. Severely worn or corroded center pins will eventually need to be repinned to restore the action to its proper condition. During the discussion, several technicians agreed that Protek CLP is an excellent tool for isolated problems, but it's not a substitute for a complete repinning job when the action truly needs one.

Think of Protek CLP as a way to buy time, not necessarily a permanent repair. We often use it to improve performance today while also helping the customer plan for more extensive service in the future. If the piano eventually requires repinning, we've already documented the issue and prepared the customer for that conversation. This approach keeps the piano playing well while building trust through honest recommendations.


What Is McLube Used For?

McLube is one of our favorite products for reducing friction throughout the keyboard and action without leaving behind a greasy residue. Unlike heavier lubricants that stay wet, McLube dries into a thin, slick film that allows moving parts to glide more freely. It's a product we commonly use during more comprehensive service packages, especially when we're performing key easing and action maintenance.

One of its primary uses is on key pins. After easing tight key bushings, we'll apply McLube to both the balance rail pins and front rail pins to help the keys move smoothly and consistently. This combination of easing and lubrication can dramatically improve the feel of a sluggish keyboard, making it an excellent finishing step after key work.

McLube functions as what many technicians informally call a key grease, a low-viscosity lubricant applied specifically to key pins and friction surfaces to improve key travel. Unlike traditional key grease products, McLube dries to a thin film rather than staying wet, which means it won't collect debris over time or create the kind of buildup that some heavier lubricants leave behind.

We also use McLube on the keyframe and glide bolts. A light application on these contact points reduces friction between the keyframe and keybed, allowing the action to move more freely while minimizing unwanted noises. It's also effective on other sliding surfaces where wood and metal meet, helping the entire action feel smoother and more responsive.

Another common application is on the keybed itself. By lubricating the keyframe contact points and other friction surfaces, McLube helps reduce drag as the action settles into place. While the changes may be subtle individually, together they contribute to a keyboard that feels noticeably more refined.

One of the reasons we like McLube so much is that it's excellent for key easing. After you've corrected tight key bushings, a light application provides a durable, low-friction surface that helps maintain smooth key travel. It's a simple step that can make a significant difference in how a piano feels to the player.

One important note: always use McLube in a well-ventilated area or outdoors whenever possible. The aerosol has strong fumes, and while they dissipate fairly quickly, spraying multiple actions indoors can become overwhelming. If you're working in a customer's home, it's courteous to let them know beforehand and, when practical, take the action outside before applying the product.


Is Teflon Powder Worth Using?

Few products generate more discussion among piano technicians than Teflon powder. Some technicians consider it an essential part of their toolkit, while others prefer newer dry-film lubricants. The reality is that both approaches can produce excellent results. Like many aspects of piano technology, experience often shapes preference, and there isn't always a single "right" answer.

One of the most common applications for Teflon powder is on grand piano knuckles. Over time, friction can develop where the jack contacts the knuckle. Applying a small amount of Teflon powder can reduce that friction and help the action feel smoother and more responsive. Some technicians use this regularly, while others prefer to leave the natural friction unchanged. Both philosophies are represented among experienced technicians.

We also use Teflon powder on keybed contact points during larger service packages. After cleaning the keybed, a light application to the areas where the keyframe contacts the keybed can help the action slide more freely while reducing unwanted friction. The key is moderation—only a small amount is needed, and it should be worked into the contact surfaces rather than left sitting on top.

Another helpful application is inside lyre boxes and other wooden contact points within the pedal system. A light dusting of Teflon powder can reduce sticking and improve the smooth movement of pedal components without leaving behind an oily residue. Because it's a dry lubricant, it won't attract dust the way some wet lubricants can.

One theme that came up repeatedly during our discussion is that experienced technicians don't always agree on lubrication methods—and that's perfectly okay. Some technicians prefer Teflon powder because it's proven and effective, while others favor modern dry-film products like McLube because they leave less visible residue. The important takeaway isn't that one product is universally better than another; it's understanding why a technician chooses a particular product and using it thoughtfully for the application at hand. As you gain experience, you'll develop your own preferences based on the pianos you service and the results you achieve.

What Lubricants Should Never Be Used on a Piano?

  • Automotive penetrating oils: These products are formulated for metal-to-metal contact in automotive and industrial applications. Piano actions contain wood, felt, and leather components that can be permanently damaged by these products.

  • Too much of anything: Over-lubrication is one of the most common mistakes technicians make. Excess product migrates into adjacent materials, attracts dust, and can change the regulation of parts that previously worked correctly. Apply only to the contact point and only as much as needed.
