FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About The Artisan School

Everything you want to know about learning piano technology, Pianocraft, and what makes The Artisan School different.

What is The Artisan School?

The Artisan School trains the next generation of piano technicians through online courses, live weekly mentoring, and hands-on in-person training. It is run by Artisan Piano Services, one of the largest piano servicing companies operating in multiple states, with more than 20 years in the field and over 25,000 customers.

What is Pianocraft?

Pianocraft encompasses far more than technical service; it represents the seamless blend of skillful artistry and precise craftsmanship in piano servicing, restoration, and creation. This holistic approach honors both the technical expertise required and the artistic sensitivity needed to bring out each instrument's unique voice and character. This is what we teach here at The Artisan School: Pianocraft, and all that goes into this beautiful trade. The art of Pianocraft starts with a deep understanding of the piano itself and only then moves on to unlocking the potential hidden within.

How can I learn with The Artisan School?

We believe mastering Pianocraft comes down to three core principles working together.

Structured Curriculum: Build a strong foundation with our step-by-step online courses. Learn at your own pace, revisit lessons anytime, and enjoy lifetime access as the courses continue to grow.

Live Mentoring: This craft has always been passed down by mentoring. Join our live mentoring sessions each week to ask questions, get personalized guidance, watch real demonstrations, and learn alongside a community of technicians.

In-Person Training: Nothing replaces hands-on experience. Train with us in Oregon City, Oregon, where you will work on real pianos alongside experienced instructors and develop the confidence that comes from doing the work yourself.

We have built The Artisan School around these three principles because we have found that is how technicians truly master the craft. Whether you begin with an online course, mentoring, or an in-person training, each program builds on the others. Together, they provide everything you need to learn, practice, and master Pianocraft.

How do I become a piano tuner or piano technician?

No prior experience is required. The Explorer Course is designed for beginners and teaches the fundamentals of piano tuning while helping you discover whether Pianocraft is the right path for you. When you are ready, you can seamlessly move into the full Pianocraft Course, where you will build the complete skills of a working piano technician: tuning, repairs, regulation, voicing, and professional piano service. Many students who come to us wondering how to become a piano tuner end up building a full career in the field.
