But getting the note to the right place is only part of the job. A piano technician also needs to learn how to physically manipulate the tuning pin so the note remains where it was placed. At the same time, you're developing movements that may eventually be repeated thousands of times each year.

What Are You Actually Moving When You Tune a Piano?
At its most basic level, tuning a piano means changing the tension of the strings by moving the tuning pins.

What Does Good Piano Tuning Posture Look Like?
There isn't one posture that works perfectly for every technician.
Body size, height, mobility, the piano itself, and even the room you're working in can change how you position yourself. But there is an important general principle:
Put yourself in a position where you have good control without unnecessarily fighting your own body.
For me, that usually means staying relatively close to the piano rather than reaching from a distance. On an upright, I position myself close enough to maintain control of the tuning lever without excessive reaching or twisting.
On a grand piano, bench placement becomes part of the technique. Rather than staying in one position throughout the entire tuning, the bench can move as you progress from bass to treble. Your positioning should support the work you're doing.
Can You Tune a Piano Sitting Down?
Absolutely.

Some technicians tune uprights from a seated position and move the bench along the piano as they work. Others alternate between sitting and standing depending on the section of the piano.
The important lesson is that good technique isn't about forcing every technician into exactly the same position.
It's about finding a position that gives you control, consistency, and a sustainable way to work.
Listen to your body. Some physical fatigue is normal while developing unfamiliar movements and muscles, but pain is a reason to reconsider your positioning and technique.
What Makes a Piano Tuning Stable?
